Drinko De Mayo Tourney Recap 2024

It was quite the on-field Fiesta!

The annual Drinko De Mayo tournament experienced damn near perfect weather in Huntington Beach this past Sunday, May 19th. The morning started off cool and calm with overcast skies, but those clouds quickly opened up and allowed the mild coastal sun and breeze to take hold of the day. With the return of the spring weather came the usual festive G & H atmosphere complete with familiar fans, tight scores, good camaraderie, and the eclectic mix of music bumpin' over the big speakers, resonating from the G & H registration tent. Umpires shouted “Play Ball” at 0830 hours and the tournament was off and runnin'!

The Pool Play Breakdown went as follows…

Pool - A
Local 47 Storm 2-0
LASD Slaps 1-1
The Park CHP 0-2

Pool - B
Long Beach PD 2-0
USMC Double Tap 1-1
CBP Portrunners 0-2

With pool play over, all teams were seeded according to their round-robin records and the single elimination brackets kicked off promptly! First up, over on Field 1 was a newcomer CHP team, “The Park” representing the Baldwin Park station of the CHP, squaring off with the young Marines of “Double Tap”. The Leathernecks out of Camp Pendleton bounced back from their pool play performance to top the “rusty” Chippies 13-5. We hope to see this CHP team again, as they continue to shake off the dust from a long off-season. Field #2 saw the other opening round game, as the #2 seed from the A-pool LASD Slaps, faced off against the #3 seed from the B-pool CBP Portrunners. This one was an absolute photo finish as the Portrunners edged out Slaps 16-15 in a nail-biter conclusion.
