Tournament Review Articles
Eleven teams signed up to battle it out for the Division Championships on August 23rd 2015. The bats were hot, the gloves were hot, and there were players blazing hot around the base-paths. But the weather was nice, mild, calm and cool down by the coast at the Huntington Beach Sportsplex.
As always, the teams that were able to get enough players to field a team, were broken down by caliber of play into two very evenly matched divisions.
All teams played some round robin games and then based upon pool play records, all teams then were seeded and moved on to single elimination bracket play.
When the dust settled the pool play wins/losses were as follows:
1 – Torrance PD 2-1
2 – LASD MCJ “Red” 2-1
3 – “Gold” Combo 2-1
4 – South “Diamondbacks” 0-3
1 – Culver City “Cowboys” 2-0
2 – Fullerton Fire 1-1
3 – “Los Bandits” 0-2
1 – USPS “Going Postal” 2-0
2 – 77th St. “Cool Arrows” 1-1
3 – DMV/DOI “Sting” 1-1
4 – Westminster CHP 0-2
With pool play finished, it was time to get down and dirty in the “single-elimination” brackets for each division. There were some very close games that could have gone either way, but again, this is a win and advance or lose and pack your bags format for the playoffs.
DIVISION II Bracket Playoff’s
The Div II Title was truly up for grabs as any one of the teams could have got hot and climbed through the bracket to the Championship. Torrance PD was awarded the top seed based upon pool play and faced a short staffed yet scrappy South Diamondbacks squad. Despite having only 9 players the Diamondbacks representing LASD had a no fear attitude and battled tough only to lose in the end to a solid Torrance team 13-9. In the lower bracket LASD Red traded jabs with Gold Combo. When the match was all said and done LASD Red moved on with a 24-14 win. The Championship game was certainly no disappointment as Torrance and LASD Red squared off and rattled each others cage. At the end of the day Red squeaked past Torrance 18-14 to claim the Crown for their own. Congrats to LASD Red for being the 2015 Hot August Days Champions!
DIVISION III Bracket Playoff’s
The road to the Division III title was just as exciting as Division II! Seven teams commenced to roughing each other up on the road to the finals. In the opening round 77th Street “Cool Arrows” jumped out on Westminster CHP and never looked back, with a decisive 20-2 victory. Fullerton Fire got hot at the right time and scorched DMV/DOI “Sting” 20-5. After going 0-2 in pool play, “Los Bandits” upended the previously undefeated USPS “Going Postal” 24-16. On to the semi-finals where the other undefeated pool play squad Culver City Cowboys narrowly edged 77th St. Cool Arrows 15-14 to move on to the Final game. In the lower half, Los Bandits continued their winning ways and doubled up Fullerton Fire 14-7. The final game was set and Culver City was looking for revenge from last month when Los Bandits knocked them off the undefeated mountain. Culver City did just that and jumped out on Los Bandits and never looked back. Final count 21-6 Culver City Cowboys claim the Title of Champions on this day!
All in all it was a great day of Public Safety Softball competition and camaraderie. The weather was unbeatable and DJ “J-Quick” was bumpin the jams while the boys were balling on the fields.
