Culver City PD "Cowboys Wrangled up the Championship at the April Foolz Frenzy at Mile Square Park

The Guns & Hoses Softball 2016 “April Fools Frenzy” was witness to 11 teams battling it out in Fountain Valley this past Saturday. The games were played under perfect Spring weather conditions and the atmosphere was filled with good times and fun, both on and off the field. There were many more teams that wanted to play, but just couldn’t quite get enough players to field a team. Being the first event of the G & H season, all teams were placed into one Division and all the teams that participated were pretty evenly matched. So, it came down to some teams getting hot, while others saw their bats go cold when it mattered most. The tournament was rockin’ with good tunes bumpin from the big speakers all day long as the teams battled it out for Guns & Hoses Glory on the fields. Pool play games resulted in the following records.

POOL A
“Unlawful Assembly” 1-1
Edwards AFB “Experimental” 1-1
Team 47 1-1

POOL B
Ventura “Outlaws” (No show)
South Bay “Outlaws” 2-0
LASD “Diamondbacks” 0-2

POOL C
Culver City PD “Cowboys” 2-0
LA Probation SEO 1-1
Culver City Fire “Bombero’s” 0-2

POOL D
“Ten Ringers” 2-0
Burbank Fire 1-1
“Sting” 0-2

PLAYOFFS

The opening round of games saw LASD “Diamondbacks topple “Sting 25-5 as “Sting” as Stings pitcher struggled to find the plate and gave up a bunch of early innings freebie’s (walks). Sting Team Captain vowed to be back to fight another day. Team 47 edged out Burbank Fire 21-15, and Unlawful Assembly got past Culver City Fire 23-8.

The quarter finals were off to an interesting start as the previously hot bats of “Ten Ringers” suddenly went ice cold, as they fell to LA Probation 16-0. Over on field #1 Edwards AFB “Experimental” barely squeaked past LASD “Diamondbacks” 10-9. Culver City “Cowboys” were looking strong after the pool play games and they kept that momentum by upending Team 47 25-13. The last game of this round saw the “old-timers” from the Southbay start to feel their age after going 2-0 during pool play, as they couldn’t keep up with Unlawful Assembly, with a final count of 26-12. The semi-finals were set, with all 4 teams looking as though it was their tournament to win. First up was LA Probation vs Edwards AFB and when the dust settled Edwards AFB claimed the win 21-6. The second game was also a lopsided affair as Unlawful Assembly was blindsided by the young guns representing the Cowboys of Culver City. Final Score 18-3 Culver City moves on.

The Championship game was now set, so let the rumble begin between Edwards AFB “Experimental” and the Culver City PD “Cowboys”. Both teams came to play and it was a back and forth battle for the first few innings, until Culver City shifted into high gear and pulled away at the end with a 26-16 victory to claim the 2016 “April Foolz Frenzy” Championship! Congrats to Culver City PD “Cowboys” in their hard fought victory. .

As always, Guns & Hoses would like to extend our sincere gratitude for all the teams and fans for making this year’s “April Fools Frenzy” such a huge success. We hope to see everyone back again for the annual “Drinko De Mayo” Tournament, Saturday May 14th at the Huntington Beach Sportsplex.
