Spring Showdown 2017 Tourney Recap

The annual “Spring Showdown” was Hot with Action and Cool with weather!

The 2017 Guns & Hoses Softball “Spring Showdown” was filled with good times on and off the field. The during tourney/after tourney party spot was good ol Lampost Pizza. The ladies of Lampost were on site to pass out discount flyers for food and beverages for Lampost. Many of the teams made their way over to Lampost for great food and spirits, while the kids played in the game room and the teams enjoyed all the sports showcased on all the big screens. Big shout out to Johnny and Kurt and the lovely ladies of Lampost Pizza! The weather was just about perfect, with the sun in the sky and a calm cool coastal breeze blowing off the Pacific as the ballers brought forth their best on the fields.

We turned and burned through the pool play games, and on to the single elimination seeded/bracketed portion of the tournament. There were many close games, and then there were the games that despite the sun in the sky, some hitting went ice cold. All nine teams that participated were pretty evenly matched, so it was anyone’s tournament to win! All teams qualified for the playoffs.

The usual G & H vibe was alive and thumping, both on and off the field, with pumping tunes from DJ “Big Jockstrap J”, and many of the fans, families, players, wives, and girlfriends were caught movin and shakin to the tunes bumpin over the big speakers.

Teams were locked in heated competition and had their eyes on the prizes, which consisted of a 36 packs of Bud & Bud Light and a team Pizza party courtesy of Lampost Pizza.

“Spring Showdown” Round Robin Pool Play went as follows:

2-0 LA County “Bad Boys”
1-1 Fort Irwin “Outlaws”
0-2 “Ten Ringers”

2-0 State Inv. “Sting”
1-1 Team 47
0-2 “Los Bandits”

2-0 Barstow “Saints”
1-1 HB “Blues”
0-2 McCormicks “MC Hammers”

Once pool play ended, all teams moved on to the single elimination brackets portion of the tournament. No matter what your pool play record was coming into the brackets, it was now a “win or go to Lampost Pizza for Beer” scenario.

This tournament was truly very evenly matched and any team could have gone all the way. So consistency was the key to advancing each round. As previously mentioned, there were many close games with tight scores that literally came down to one good or bad inning that decided the majority of the games.

After the climb through the brackets, there were two teams remaining, each with their eyes on the prize. LA County Bad Boys were undefeated on the day up to now, while Fort Irwin “Outlaws” only loss of the day was an early morning pool play one run loss to, you guessed it, the “Bad Boys”. Fort Irwin was looking for redemption, while Bad Boys were looking to stay undefeated and claim the crown. It was a close game over the first 5 inning with a score of 10-6 going into the sixth inning. While being up by 4 runs, the Outlaws rallied and extended the lead scoring 7 runs in the 6th inning, while Bad Boys went cold. Then came the final inning, the seventh, in which the Outlaws plated another 8 runs. Bad boys couldn’t muster up the horses to finish strong. Final count 25-7 Fort Irwin Outlaws are the 2017 “Spring Showdown” Champions! Congratulation to the Outlaws and all their families and fans for being victorious on this day.
For the making the Finals, both the Outlaws and Bad Boys enjoyed free pizza courtesy of the Tournament host Lampost Pizza and they also walked away with 36 count cases of Bu and Bud light!

We at Guns & Hoses Softball would once again like to extend a sincere thank you for all the teams, players, and fans who participated in this years 2017 “Spring Showdown”. We look forward to seeing everyone back again during the course of the regular season.

The next tournament is the road trip out to Cathedral City for the annual 2 day party at Big League Dreams Sportspark. Saturday & Sunday July 15th & 16th. This one is a 5 game guarantee with 3 games round robin, followed by “double elimination brackets! SEE you there!!!
