April Fools 2023 - Tourney Recap

The annual “April Foolz Frenzy” Tournament was cool with the weather and Hot with the Action in Huntington Beach this past Sunday!

The 2023 Guns & Hoses Softball “April Foolz Frenzy” Tournament was filled with good times on and off the field. The weather was just about perfect after the little bit of cloud cover in the morning opened up. The sun in the sky with the cool coastal breeze blowing off the Pacific was just about right as the Public Safety baller’s brought forth their A-games on the fields at Edison Park!

A total of 16 teams wanted a piece of the action on Sunday, but unfortunately, due to limited fields, this event was capped at 12 teams. The 12 teams were divided as evenly as possible into two separate divisions. We turned and burned through the pool play games, and on to the single elimination seeded/bracketed portion of the tournament. There were many close games, and then there were the games that despite the sun in the sky, some hitting went ice cold. All teams that participated in each division were pretty evenly matched, so it was anyone’s tournament to win! All teams qualified for the playoffs, no matter what their pool play record was.

Teams were encouraged to bring their EZ-Ups, lawn chairs, coolers, and BBQ’s and that is precisely what they did. It was great to see the teams chillin during game breaks and building that priceless team camaraderie while sharing drinks and snacks throughout the day.

The usual G & H vibe was alive and thumping, both on and off the field, with pumping tunes from DJ “Large Jockstrap J”, and many of the fans, families, players, wives, and girlfriends were caught movin and shakin to the tunes bumpin over the big speakers.

Teams were locked in heated competition and had their eyes on the prize, which consisted of the Top Shelf Irish Whiskey (from the rain-out in March), which was either the aged Jameson finished in Craft Beer barrels, or the Orange infused Jameson.

Before the brackets were set for the single elimination playoffs, the pool play records looked like this:

Division I
Pool A
2-0 CDC Cali Bombers
1-1 Pickles
0-2 LASD Slaps

Pool B
2-0 USMC Double Tap
1-1 Countywide
0-2 Omerta

Division II
Pool C
1-1 LASD IRC
1-1 LACFD County Bears
1-1 Local 47 Storm

Pool D
2-0 CBP Portrunners
1-1 Covina PD
0-2 CDCR Misfits

Once pool play ended, all teams moved on to the single elimination brackets portion of the tournament. No matter what your pool play record was coming into the brackets, it was now a “win or pack your trash” scenario.

This tournament was truly very evenly matched and any team could have gone all the way in either Division. So consistency was the key to advancing each round. As previously mentioned, there were many close games with tight scores that literally came down to one good or bad inning that decided the majority of the games.

Championship Division II
After all the pool play battles and early bracket play, the two teams remaining in the hunt for the Championship in Division II were the CBP Portrunners whom were undefeated all day going into the finals, and Local 47 Storm which found themselves as a #3 seed after pool play concluded, and had to claw their way to the championship game. Local 47 had slipped by LASD IRC in their semi-final game 11-6, and CBP Portrunners edged out the Firefighters of LA County 17-14 in their semi-final match-up. This Championship game started off as a back and forth boat race in the early innings and continued to be a nail-biter all the way to the finish line, as Local 47 Storm up-ended the Portrunners perfect day by a score of 20-16.

Championship Division I
Almost every single game in Division I, in both pool play and bracket play was decided by less than 3 runs, with several walk-off games during the last at-bats in this tournament. After pool play and into the Championship round, there were two undefeated teams on the day left standing. Coming out of the A-pool was CDC Cali Bombers whom barely slipped past Omerta in the semi-finals 10-9, and the B-pool #1 seed, USMC Double Tap that eeked out a win against the Police combo team going by Pickles, 19-15. Two undefeated teams locking horns in the Finals, but somebody’s “0” has got to go! This was yet another epic battle under the lights as these two teams traded punches all the way into the 7th inning. When the dust settled, and the umpire yelled “Ballgame”, it was CDC Cali Bombers that claimed victory by a final count of 16-13.

Congratulations to CDC Cali Bombers and Local 47 Storm for battling it out all day and earning the title of 2023 April Foolz Frenzy Champions! For their efforts both of these teams took home the coveted Irish Whiskey and the bragging rights as Champs!

We at Guns & Hoses Softball would once again like to extend a sincere thank you for all the teams, players, and fans that participated in the 2023 “April Foolz Frenzy” event. We look forward to seeing everyone back again during the course of the 2023 season.

The next tournament will be the annual “Drinko De Mayo” Tournament to be held at Big League Dreams Sports park, Cathedral City on Sunday May 21st. We hope to see you there!
