2023 “Drinko De Mayo” Tourney Recap

The 2023 Guns & Hoses Softball “Drinko De Mayo” Tournament was held this past weekend in Cathedral City at the Big League Dreams Sports Park. This event was filled with good times on and off the field. The weather cooperated and only reached a measly 98 degrees and that was briefly around 4 pm and then it started cooling back down again. While off the field, and in the BLD Sports bar, the teams, friends, and family enjoyed great drinks, food, and all the major sports showcased on the big screens throughout BLD. On the field, teams and players brought forth their "A" games and battled it out for Guns & Hoses Glory on the ball fields modeled after Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, and Wrigley Field.

Each team received an extra pool game for the effort of making the trek out to Cathedral City. We turned and burned through the pool play games, and on to the single elimination seeded/bracketed portion of the tournament. There were many close games, and then there were the games that despite the sun in the sky, some hitting went ice cold. All eight teams that participated were pretty evenly matched, so it was anyone’s tournament to win! All teams qualified for the playoffs.

Teams were locked in heated competition and had their eyes on the prizes, which consisted of the “Grande” bottles of Cuervo Gold Tequila.

Drinko De Mayo Pool Play went as follows:

3-0 Never 4 Get
2-1 Local 47 Storm
1-2 Riverside County Heat
0-3 Hard Times

3-0 USMC SoCal Magas
1-2 CDC Cali Bombers
1-2 USMC Double Tap
1-2 Pickles

Once pool play ended, all teams moved on to the single elimination brackets portion of the tournament. No matter what your pool play record was coming into the brackets, it was now a “win or head back to the BLD barstools for another Beer” scenario.

This tournament was evenly matched and any team could have gone all the way. So consistency was the key to advancing each round. As previously mentioned, there were many close games with tight scores that literally came down to one good or bad inning that decided the majority of the games.

Bracket play opened up on Yankee Stadium with Never 4 Get battling it out with Pickles. This was truly one of the best games of the entire day as these two teams traded the lead multiple times over 7 innings. When the dust settled, it was Never 4 Get slipping the Pickles 23-22, to move on to the next round. Over on Wrigley Field, Riverside County Heat was engaged in a close battle all game with CDC Cali Bombers. This was another back-and-forth boat race to the finish with the Heat taking a late lead that the Bombers couldn’t match. Final score 21-17 Riverside County Heat moves on to the semi-finals. Next up was Local 47 Storm squaring off against USMC Double Tap (one of the two Marine teams hailing from Camp Pendleton). In yet another close game on the day, Double Tap squeaked by Local 47 Storm 11-7 to advance to the next round. The final game of the opening round of the playoffs was the only mercy game of the day which had USMC SoCal Magas upending Hard Times 24-3. Hard Times had been playing with only 9 players much of the day and they simply ran out of gas during this game.

The semi-final match-ups were set and each of the four remaining teams could have been crowned Champions if they played up to their ability. The game over on Yankee stadium matched undefeated on the day Never 4 Get versus the scrappy “never say die” team representing Riverside County Heat. This was yet another hard-fought battle, but in the end, Never 4 Get did not forget to plate more runs than their opponent, as they doubled up Riverside Heat 16-8. Wrigley Field was witness to the clash of the titans as the Leatherneck teams from Camp Pendleton battled it out to see which team would represent the USMC in the Championship game. Marines truly don’t like to lose, so these teams locked horns all the way to the finish line. SoCal Magas stayed undefeated on the day as they plated 15 runs versus the 6 runs scored by Double tap, to move into the final round.

After the climb through the brackets, there were two teams remaining, each with their eyes on the prize, and each of these teams was undefeated on the day. But….. somebody’s “0” has got to go! The Championship game pitted Never 4 Get against USMC SoCal Magas. This was a classic “age and experience” versus “youth and exuberance” as the majority of the players on Never 4 Get are 50+ years of age, while the majority of the Marines are in their 20s. Despite being hot all day up to this game, the bats of Never 4 Get went ice cold as they ran out of steam in this game. The Marines did not forget how to find the gaps and hit the holes as they plated 20 runs. The final count was 20-0 when Never 4 Get threw in the towel and called it a day. They have nothing to hang their head about as they hung in there all tournament long.

Congratulations to USMC SoCal Magas and all their families and friends for supporting them all day as they remained undefeated and claimed the 2023 Drinko De Mayo Championship Crowns! For their efforts, the Champs walked away the Grande bottles of Cuervo Gold Tequila for winning the 2023 Drinko De Mayo Tournament.

We at Guns & Hoses Softball would once again like to extend a sincere thank you to all the teams, players, and fans who participated in this year's Drinko De Mayo Tournament. We look forward to seeing everyone back again for our upcoming events.
